Welcome to the Sweet Mystery Shape Along (SAL) - a playful new twist on the traditional crochet along ✨, where we do shaping as we do crocheting

This free crochet event is released in parts, so you can follow along week by week and now we are into the third part, at almost the halfway mark!

Remember, we’re approaching things a little differently.

    Part 3 – Well Rested!

    We have done up the neck and the top half of the body, let’s work the rest and then start contouring into the limbs! Follow along the full pattern round by round below, while the video will show you all the key shaping highlights that occur in this part.

    Materials You’ll Need

    The materials needed are listed below or if you wish to see what I start off most of my projects with, then check out this post on “My Crochet Tools and Accessories that are Super Simple to Start With”. This time I will be working with chunky weight yarn.

    Yarn

    Himalayan Dolphin or Dolce Yarnart or any equivalent chunky weight yarn for main piece

    • Grey (100g)

    • White (100g)

    Scheepjes Catona or any equivalent fingering or sport weight yarn for accessories

    • Black (25g)

    • White (25g)

    Crochet Hooks

    Rest of Supplies

    Darning needle

    Stitch markers

    Filling – use leftover yarn or polyester fiberfill

    Yarn

    1. Chunky weight yarn - Himalayan Dolphin or Dolce Yarnart or any equivalent for main piece

    White x 1 (100g)

     

    Grey x 1 (100g)

    2. Fingering weight yarn - Scheepjes Catona for accessories

    White x 1 (25g)

    Black x 1 (25g)

    Crochet Hooks

    Larger

    5.0mm Streamline Wood Crochet Hooks Limited Edition Sage Ombre

    Rest of Supplies

    Darning Needles

    Stuffing

    Use leftover yarn or polyester fibrefill

    Stitch Markers

    Plastic stitch markers or metal stitch markers


    Terminology You’ll Need

    Here I have listed the techniques needed to crochet just this first part . Each one is individually linked if you need to learn more about how to master each technique, or you could check out this post on “How to Learn Basic Crochet Stitches step by step for Absolute Beginners - 6 Easy Steps!”.

    Basic Crochet Stitches

    Ch = chain

    Sc = single crochet

    Hdc = half double crochet

    Dc = double crochet

    Tr = treble crochet

    Sl st = slip stitch

    St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)

    Inc = single crochet increase (meaning 2 single crochet in same stitch) 

    Sc2tog = single crochet decrease (referring to invisible decrease) 

    FLO = front loop only

    BLO = back loop only

    RS = right side

    WS = wrong side

    Special Crochet Stitches

    3 sc in next st= 3 single crochet in same stitch

    Sc3tog = single crochet 3 together

    • = insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up loop, insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop, insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through all loops on hook

    3-dc popcorn= 3-dc pop

    • = work 3 dc in same st, remove hook, insert hook into first dc, pull loop through

    Working into upper row / short row section

    • = crochet into stitches from previously turned rows

    Sweet Mystery SAL Part 3

    Continue into rows, still using grey yarn, working rest of body.

    Row 1 (WS): Turn, skip first st, sc 22 — 22 sts

    Row 2 (RS): Turn, skip first st, sc 20 — 20 sts

    Row 3 (WS): Turn, skip first st, sc 18 — 18 sts

    Row 4 (RS): Turn, skip first st, sc 16 — 16 sts

    Row 5 (WS): Turn, skip first st, sc 14 — 14 sts

    Row 6 (RS): Turn, skip first st, sc 12 — 12 sts

    Row 7 (WS): Turn, skip first st, sc 10 — 10 sts

    Row 8 (RS): Turn, skip first st, sc 8 — 8 sts

    Row 9 (WS): Turn, skip first st, sc 6 — 6 sts

    Row 10 (RS): Turn, skip first st, sc 4 — 4 sts

    Row 11 (WS): Turn, skip first st, sc 2 — 2 sts

    Row 12 (RS): Turn, skip first st, sc 1 — 1 st

    Do not fasten off, continue crocheting into the next part

    Left Leg

    Continue working into a smaller section of the round using grey yarn, to make left leg.

    Round 1: Work into the 3 sts before the original start of round (stitch marker).

    Reposition stitch marker at the start of this round. Sc 9, sc 6 into each upper row (each short row section) — 18 sts

    Rounds 2-3: Sc 18 — 18 sts

    Add stuffing to body.

    Round 4: Sc 12, (sc3tog) × 2 — 14 sts

    Round 5: Sc2tog, sc 10, sc2tog — 12 sts

    Rounds 6-9 (5 rounds): Sc 12 — 12 sts

    Add stuffing to leg.

    Round 10: (Sc 1, sc2tog) × 4 — 8 sts

    Round 11 (colourwork): Sc 4 (grey), (3-dc pop) × 3 (white), sc 1 (grey) — 8 sts

    Round 12: (Sc2tog) × 2, sc 4 — 6 sts

    Close remaining sts in FLO and fasten off.
