Welcome to the Sweet Mystery Shape Along (SAL) - a playful new twist on the traditional crochet along ✨! We are almost nearing the end of this shape along and after this part, you will almost definitely be able to recognize our little character. This free crochet event has just 1 more part left so stay tuned for the big reveal soon!

Part 5 – Start Sniffing!
We have now completed most of the head, body and the limbs and let’s get started on some facial shaping! For this section, we are reusing a favourite curved bend technique to make a distinctive part of the face.
To follow along the exact pattern line by line, check out the pattern snippet below, as for the video, we will be broadly talking about how the shaping is done so both the pattern and the video should nicely complement each other! Materials You’ll Need
The materials needed are listed below or if you wish to see what I start off most of my projects with, then check out this post on “My Crochet Tools and Accessories that are Super Simple to Start With”. This time I will be working with chunky weight yarn.
Yarn
Himalayan Dolphin or Dolce Yarnart or any equivalent chunky weight yarn for main piece
Grey (100g)
White (100g)
Scheepjes Catona or any equivalent fingering or sport weight yarn for accessories
Black (25g)
White (25g)
Crochet Hooks
5.0mm Streamline Wood Crochet Hooks Limited Edition Sage Ombre
You can use any brand with these 2 sizes
Rest of Supplies
Darning needle
Filling – use leftover yarn or polyester fiberfill

Terminology You’ll Need

Basic Crochet Stitches
Ch = chain
St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)
Inc = single crochet increase (meaning 2 single crochet in same stitch)
Sc2tog = single crochet decrease (referring to invisible decrease)
Special Crochet Stitches
Surface sc = surface single crochet

Sweet Mystery SAL Part 5
Face
Join yarn at the bottom right corner (when facing the piece) and surface crochet with grey yarn. Work in clockwise direction.
Round 1: Sc 4 across bottom, sc 12 across top — 16 sts
Round 2: (Sc 2, sc2tog) × 4 — 12 sts
Round 3: Sc 1, inc x 2, sc 4, (sc2tog) × 2, sc 1 — 12 sts
Round 4: Sc 2, inc x 2, sc 4, (sc2tog) × 2 — 12 sts
Round 5: Sc 3, inc x 2, sc 2, (sc2tog) × 2, sc 1 — 12 sts
Rounds 6-16 (11 rounds): Sc2tog, sc 3, inc x 2, sc 3, sc2tog — 12 sts
Add stuffing to trunk.
Add stuffing to the trunk as you go.
Round 17: (Sc2tog) × 6 in BLO — 6 sts
Close remaining sts in FLO and fasten off.
