    Part 3 โ€“ Halfway There!

    Today's mystery project introduces another friendly face to our woodland cast. Like the previous projects, it's completely no sew, but this time we'll explore a fun shaping technique that builds a facial feature directly into the main structure.

    Follow along with the written pattern below for every stitch and round, while the companion video highlights the key construction, shaping, and finishing details that bring this character to life.

    Materials Youโ€™ll Need

    The materials needed are listed below or if you wish to see what I start off most of my projects with, then check out this post on โ€œMy Crochet Tools and Accessories that are Super Simple to Start Withโ€. This time I will be working with chunky weight yarn.

    Yarn

    Scheepjes Catona or any equivalent fingering or sport weight yarn for accessories

    • Dark brown (25g)

    • Orange (25g)

    • Red (25g)

    • Green (25g)

    • Light brown (50g)

    • Eyes: Black (stash)

    Crochet Hooks

    Rest of Supplies

    Darning needle

    Stitch markers

    Filling โ€“ use leftover yarn or polyester fiberfill

    1. Fingering weight yarn - Scheepjes Catona for accessories

    • Orange (25g)

    • Red (25g)

    • Light brown (50g)

    Stuffing

    Use leftover yarn or polyester fibrefill

    Stitch Markers

    Plastic stitch markers or metal stitch markers


    Terminology Youโ€™ll Need

    Here I have listed the techniques needed to crochet just this first part .     Basic Crochet Stitches

    Ch = chain

    Sc = single crochet

    Hdc = half double crochet

    Dc = double crochet

    Tr = treble crochet

    Sl st = slip stitch

    St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)

    Inc = single crochet increase (meaning 2 single crochet in same stitch) 

    Sc2tog = single crochet decrease (referring to invisible decrease) 

    FLO = front loop only

    BLO = back loop only

    Special Crochet Stitches

    4 sc in next st = 4 single crochet in same stitch

    3 hdc in next st = 3 half double crochet in same stitch

    Sc5tog = single crochet 5 together

    • = insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop, [insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop] 4 times, yo, pull through all loops on hook

    Work (sc, dc, dc, sc) over next 4 sts, then yarn over and pull through all loops

    • = work (sc, dc, dc, sc) in next 4 sts, keeping last loop of each stitch on hook, yo, pull through all loops on hook

    5-tr bob = 5 treble crochet bobble stitch

    • = yo twice, insert hook in indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, draw through 2 loops, [yo twice, insert hook in same st, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, draw through 2 loops] 4 times, yo, pull through all loops on hook

    Surface sc = surface single crochet

    • holding working yarn behind piece, hook in front of piece, insert hook through piece, yo, pull yarn through piece, proceed to sc

    Rustling Mystery MAL Part 3

    Rooster Head

    Start off head with light brown yarn.

    Round 1: Magic ring sc 8 โ€“ 8 sts

    Round 2: (Sc 1, inc) x 4 โ€“ 12 sts

    Round 3: (Sc 2, inc) x 4 โ€“ 16 sts

    Round 4: (Sc 3, inc) x 4 โ€“ 20 sts

    Round 5: Sc 8, inc x 2, sc 10 โ€“ 22 sts

    Round 6: Sc 10, change to orange, 3 hdc in next st, change to light brown, sc 11 โ€“ 24 sts

    Round 7: Sc 11, change to orange, 4 sc in next st, change to light brown, sc 12 โ€“ 27 sts

    Round 8: Sc 11, change to orange, work (sc, dc, dc, sc) over next 4 sts, then yarn over and pull through all loops, change to light brown, sc 12 - 24 sts

    Round 9: Sc 9, change to orange, sc5tog, change to light brown, sc 10 โ€“ 20 sts

    Round 10: Sc7, change to red, sc5tog, change to light brown, sc 8 โ€“ 16 sts

    Round 11:

    (Sc 1 in orange, sc 1 in light brown) x 3,

    5-tr bob in red,

    sc 1 in light brown,

    5-tr bob in red,

    sc 1 in light brown,

    (sc 1 in orange, sc 1 in light brown) x 3 - 16 sts

    Add stuffing to head. Cut off light brown and red yarn.

    Rooster Body

    Continue into body using orange yarn.

    Round 12: (Sc 3, inc) x 4 - 20 sts

    Round 13:

    [(sc 1 in FLO, ch 2, sl st 1 in 2nd ch from hook), (sl st 1 in next st FLO)] ร— 9,

    (sc 1 in FLO, ch 2, sl st 1 in 2nd ch from hook),

    sc 1 in next st FLO - 20 sts

    Change to dark brown yarn.

    Round 14: Sc20 in BLO - 20 sts

    Round 15:

    Inc x 2, sc 4, inc,

    [sc 1 in FLO in green, ch 2, (sl st 1 into 2nd ch from hook), (dc 1, hdc 1, sc 1) in next FLO],

    change to dark brown, (sc 1, inc) x 3, inc,

    [(sc 1, hdc 1, dc 1) in FLO in green, (ch 1, sl st 1 in next ch, ch 2 and sc 1 into next st]),

    change to dark brown, sc 4 - 33 sts

    Round 16: Sc 1, inc x 2, sc 7, sc 1 in BLO, sc 11, sc 1 in BLO, sc 4 - 29 sts

    Cut off green yarn. Continue using dark brown yarn.

    Round 17: Sc 2, inc x 2, sc 25 - 31 sts

    Round 18: Sc 3, inc x 2, sc 7, (sc1, sc2tog) x 5, sc 4 - 28 sts

    Round 19: Sc 4, inc x 2, sc 22 - 30 sts

    Round 20: Sc 5, inc x 2, sc 23 - 32 sts

    Round 21: Sc 5, skip 4 st, sc 7, sc2tog x 7, sc 2 - 21 sts

    Add stuffing to body. We are making the feet in the next round.

    Round 22: Sc 1, sc4tog x 2, sc2tog x 2, sc 1, change to orange, sc 1 in FLO,

    (ch 2, sl st 1 into 2nd ch from hook, sl st 1 in next st) x 2,

    (ch 2, sl st 1 into 2nd ch from hook, sc 1 in next st),

    change to dark brown, sc2tog, sc 1,

    change to orange, sc 1 in FLO,

    (ch 2, sl st 1 into 2nd ch from hook, sl st 1 in next st) x 2,

    (ch 2, sl st 1 into 2nd ch from hook, sc 1 in next st),

    change to dark brown, sc2tog - 11 sts

    Round 23: Sc2tog x 3, sc 1 in BLO, sc2tog, sc 1 in BLO, sc 1 - 7 sts

    Cut off orange yarn, continue with dark brown yarn.

    Round 24: Sc 1, sc2tog, sc 1, sc2tog, sc 1 - 5 sts

    Cut off excess yarn and leave some for closing up. Close up in front loops only.

    Rooster Crest

    Use red yarn to make the comb or crest on top of head.

    Surface sc 1 in middle back of head, starting about 5 rounds from top, (ch 2, sl st 1 into 2nd ch from hook), (sc 1 in next st above on head, ch 2, sl st 1 into 2nd ch from hook) x 5

    Tail

    Use green yarn to make the tail, starting at bottom tip of tail.

    Surface sc 1 in middle of tail,

    (ch 8, work into 2nd ch from hook, sc 3, inc, sc 3),

    (sc 1 in next st above on tail, ch 8, sc 3, inc, sc 3) x 2

    Sl st 1 and end off

    Eyes

    Use black yarn to make French knots for both eyes approximately 2 rounds above the orange beak on either side of head.
