Part 4 – A New Texture to Explore
Today's mystery project is all about texture. We'll revisit a familiar crochet technique and use it in a completely different way, showing how a simple stitch can add so much personality to a character.
You'll also see how the limbs are worked seamlessly into the body, allowing the whole project to come together with very little assembly.
Follow along with the written pattern below for every stitch and round, while the companion video highlights the key construction, texturing, and shaping moments that bring this mystery project to life.

Materials You’ll Need
The materials needed are listed below or if you wish to see what I start off most of my projects with, then check out this post on “My Crochet Tools and Accessories that are Super Simple to Start With”. This time I will be working with chunky weight yarn.
Yarn
Scheepjes Catona or any equivalent fingering or sport weight yarn for accessories
Dark brown (25g)
Light brown (50g)
Eyes: Black (stash)
Crochet Hooks
You can use any brand
Rest of Supplies
Darning needle
Filling – use leftover yarn or polyester fiberfill

Terminology You’ll Need

Basic Crochet Stitches
Ch = chain
St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)
Inc = single crochet increase (meaning 2 single crochet in same stitch)
Sc2tog = single crochet decrease (referring to invisible decrease)
Special Crochet Stitches
3 hdc in next st = 3 half double crochet in same stitch
Sc5tog = single crochet 5 together
= insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop, [insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop] 4 times, yo, pull through all loops on hook
Work (sc, dc, dc, sc) over next 4 sts, then yarn over and pull through all loops
= work (sc, dc, dc, sc) in next 4 sts, keeping last loop of each stitch on hook, yo, pull through all loops on hook
3-dc bob = 3 double crochet bobble stitch
= yo, insert hook in indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops, [yo, insert hook in same, yo, pull through 2 loops] 2 times, yo, pull through 4 loops on hook
Surface sc = surface single crochet

Hedgehog Head and Body
Use dark brown to make the head and body.
Round 1: Magic ring sc 6 — 6 sts
Round 2: Inc x 6 — 12 sts
Round 3: Sc 12 — 12 sts
Round 4: (Sc1, inc) x 6 — 18 sts
Round 5: Sc 7, change to light brown, sc 5, change to dark brown, sc 6 — 18 sts
Round 6: Sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, change to light brown, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 1, change to dark brown, sc 1, inc, sc 2, inc — 24 sts
Round 7: Sc 8, change to light brown, sc 3, inc x 2, sc 4, change to dark brown, sc 7 - 26 sts
Round 8: Sc 3, inc, sc 3, inc, change to light brown, sc 5, 3 hdc in next st, sc 5, change to dark brown, sc 2, inc, sc 3, inc - 32 sts
Round 9: Sc 10, change to light brown, sc 6, 4 sc in next st, sc 6, change to dark brown, sc 9 - 35 sts
Round 10: Sc 10, change to light brown, sc 6, work (sc, dc, dc, sc) over next 4 sts, then yarn over and pull through all loops, sc 6, change to dark brown, sc 9 - 32 sts
Round 11: Sc 10, change to light brown, sc 4, sc5tog, sc 4, change to dark brown, sc 9 - 28 sts
Round 12: Sc 10, change to light brown, sc 3, sc3tog, sc 4, change to dark brown, sc 8 - 26 sts
We will be working the arms in the next round.
Round 13:
Sc 10, change to light brown,
(sc 1, ch 6, 3-dc bob in 3rd ch from hook, sl st 1 in next 3 ch, sc 1 in next st),
sc 6,
(sc 1, ch 6, 3-dc bob in 3rd ch from hook, sl st 1 in next 3 ch, sc 1 in next st),
change to dark brown, sc 8 — 28 sts
Round 14:
Sc 10, change to light brown, sc 1 in next st before arm,
skip next st after arm, sc 6,
sc 1 in next st before arm,
skip next st after arm,
change to dark brown, sc 8 — 26 sts
Rounds 15-16: Sc 10, change to light brown, sc 8, change to dark brown, sc 8 - 26 sts
Rounds 17-18: Sc 10, change to light brown, sc 9, change to dark brown, sc 7 - 26 sts
Round 19:
Sc 13, change to light brown,
(sc 1, ch 6, 3-dc bob in 3rd ch from hook, sl st 1 in next 3 ch),
sc 1 in next st, sc 2,
(sc 1, ch 6, 3-dc bob in 3rd ch from hook, sl st 1 in next 3 ch),
sc 1 in next st,
change to dark brown, sc 9 - 28 sts
Add stuffing to body. Cut off light brown yarn. Continue with dark brown yarn.
Round 20:
(Sc2tog) × 6,
sc2tog in next st before arm,
skip next st after leg, sc2tog,
sc 1 in next st before leg,
skip next st after leg, sc 1,
(sc2tog) × 4 — 14 sts
Round 21: Sc2tog x 7 - 7 sts
Cut off any excess yarn and leave a trail to close up. Close up in FLO in the final round.
Hedgehog Nostril
Join black yarn to the protruding snout at Round 8 of the head.
Work surface crochet: sc 1, ch 2, 3-dc bob in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 1 in next st and fasten off
Hedgehog Eyes
Position French knots as eyes using black yarn on either side of snout.
Hedgehog Spikes/ Quills
Use dark brown yarn to make the quills or spikes over the back.
Join yarn on top of the head and work surface crochet in a clockwise direction.
Round 1:
(Surface sc 1, ch 2, sc 1 in 2nd ch from hook,
sl st 1 in next st),
repeat around over dark brown sections in rounds only.
When reaching the body (back section), turn and continue working back and forth in rows. You should get a textured appearance over the back of the hedgehog.
