Free Crochet Sunflower Pattern
Here’s a great flower to try crocheting - a sunflower! It makes a great gift for Valentine’s Day and also Mother’s Day. Try it out using distinctive colours for a sunflower, including bright yellow, brown and dark brown. Make a small bouquet of them or add them to the rest of the flowers in the bunch below.

Introduction to Crocheting Sunflower with Stalk
In this post, we will first be starting off with the relevant supplies and techniques you would need to crochet this sunflower. Here to make the flower itself, we will be using 3 yarn colours, then the stalk will be in another colour.
As this is a ambitious beginner pattern, here you will learn how to crochet a spade shape for each individual petal and use the puff stitch for the middle part of the flower.

Supplies and Techniques for Crocheting Sunflower with Stalk
Here I have listed the techniques as well as the materials needed to crochet a sunflower. There is just one special stitch used here which is the puff stitch, you can see more below.

Terminology for Crocheting Sunflower with Stalk
Ch = chain
Dtr = double treble crochet
St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)
2sc1 = single crochet increase (meaning 2 single crochet in same stitch)
Sc2tog1 = single crochet decrease (referring to invisible decrease)
3hdc puff = 3 half double crochet puff stitch
= yo, insert hook in indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, insert hook again, pull up loop, repeat one last time, yo, pull through all loops on hook
Materials and Tools for Crocheting Sunflower
3.5mm Furls Streamline Blush crochet hook
Scheepjes Catona or any equivalent fingering or sport weight yarn
Yellow, Brown, Dark Brown, Green (25gm each)
Scissors

Now that you have gathered your supplies and had a look at the basic terminology to reading the following pattern, let us first get started!
Yarn
Scheepjes Catona or any equivalent fingering or sport weight yarn
Crochet hook
2.5-3.0mm Clover crochet hook
Stuffing
Use leftover yarn or polyester fibrefill
Darning Needles
Safety Eyes
4mm glass eyes or safety eyes
Stitch Markers
Plastic stitch markers or metal stitch markers
Crochet Sunflower Pattern
Crochet Sunflower Petals
Start off sunflower using dark brown yarn.
Round 1: Magic ring sc5 (dark brown) - 5st
Round 2: 2sc5 (dark brown) - 10st
Switch to brown yarn from dark brown yarn.
Round 3: 3hdc puff x 10 (brown) - 10st
Round 4: 2sc10 (brown) - 20st
Then move onto petals in yellow.
Round 5: (Sc1 FLO, ch3, dc1 FLO, tr1 FLO, ch1 and sl st 1 down in FLO, dc1 FLO, ch3, sl st 1 back into same st FLO) x 20 - 20st
Cut off dark brown and brown yarn. Switch to green yarn.
Round 6: Sc2tog10 BLO (green) - 10st
Cut off yellow yarn.
Use standard decrease for Round 6, not invisible decrease.
Add stuffing to flower.
Round 7: Sc2tog5 (green) - 5st
This time use invisible decrease for Round 7.
Close up in FLO and fasten off.
Crochet Sunflower Stalk
Use green yarn to make the whole sunflower stalk.
Round 1: Magic ring sc4 - 4st
Round 2: Sc4 BLO - 4st
Round 3: Sc4 - 4st
Rounds 4-10 (7 rounds): Repeat Round 3 - 4st
Then move onto making the first leaf.
Round 11: Sc1, [(sc1, hdc1, dc1, tr1, dtr1) all in same FLO, (ch2, sl st 1 down ch), ch5, sl st 1 onto original 1st FLO st], sc2 - 4st
Round 12: Sc1, sc1 BLO, sc2 - 4st
Round 13: Sc4 - 4st
Round 14: [(Sc1, hdc1, dc1, tr1, dtr1) all in same FLO, (ch2, sl st 1 down ch), ch5, sl st 1 onto original 1st FLO st], sc3 - 4st
Round 15: Sc1 BLO, sc3 - 4st
Round 16: Sc4 - 4st
Rounds 17-18: Repeat Round 16 - 4st
Round 19: 2sc4 - 8st
Round 20: {Sc1, [(sc1, hdc1, dc1, tr1, dtr1) all in same st, (ch2, sl st 1 down ch), ch5, sl st 1 onto original 1st st]} x 4, then end off - 8st
Attach this last round to the back of the sunflower above and sew it down.
