🎄 Welcome Back to the Festive Mystery CAL – Part 8

We’re nearly there! With three legs in place, your festive friend is almost ready to stand proudly on all fours. In this part, we’ll be adding the right front leg, completing the full set. 🦌 Once this step is finished, your character will have all four legs crocheted on — a huge milestone in the CAL!

As always, you’ll have clear step-by-step instructions, photos, and a video tutorial to guide you. Meanwhile in the story, Nibbles is feeling more determined than ever, even as Tinsel’s mischief keeps the snack hunt interesting. 🍬

    Part 8 – Standing Tall

    By the end of this section, your character will finally have a sturdy stance with all four legs complete. ✨ This is the moment where your festive friend looks truly ready to move, play, and join Nibbles in the holiday fun.

    It’s a satisfying milestone — the shape is nearly complete, and you can clearly see the personality shining through. But don’t put down your hook just yet — there are still important finishing details ahead that will make your project truly special.

    So take a moment to celebrate, snap a photo of your four-legged friend, and keep going strong toward the grand reveal!

    Materials You’ll Need

    The materials needed are listed below or if you wish to see what I start off most of my projects with, then check out this post on “My Crochet Tools and Accessories that are Super Simple to Start With”. This time I will be working with chunky weight yarn.

    Yarn

    Himalayan Dolphin or Dolce Yarnart or any equivalent chunky weight yarn for main piece

    • Brown (100g)

    • Dark brown (100g)

    • White (100g)

    Scheepjes Catona or any equivalent fingering or sport weight yarn for accessories

    • Black (25g)

    • White (25g)

    Crochet Hooks

    4.5mm Etimo Tulip crochet hook

    3.0mm Clover Soft Touch crochet hook

    Rest of Supplies

    Darning needle

    Stitch markers

    Filling – use leftover yarn or polyester fiberfill

    Terminology You’ll Need

    Here I have listed the techniques needed to crochet just this first part. Each one is individually linked if you need to learn more about how to master each technique, or you could check out this post on “How to Learn Basic Crochet Stitches step by step for Absolute Beginners - 6 Easy Steps!”.

    Basic Crochet Stitches

    Ch = chain

    Sc = single crochet

    Hdc = half double crochet

    Dc = double crochet

    Tr = treble crochet

    Sl st = slip stitch 

    St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)

    2sc1 = single crochet increase (meaning 2 single crochet in same stitch) 

    Sc2tog1 = single crochet decrease (referring to invisible decrease) 

    FLO = front loop only

    BLO = back loop only

    Special Crochet Stitches

    3sc2 = 3 single crochet in next 2 stitches

    Sc3tog1 = single crochet 3 together

    • = insert hook in indicated, yo, pull up loop, insert hook in next st, yo, pull up loop, repeat another 1 times, yo, pull through all loops on hook

    • (or single crochet cluster stitch)

    Dc6tog1 = double crochet 6 together

    • = yo, insert hook in indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2, [yo, insert hook in next, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2] 5 times, (7 loops on hook), yo, pull through all loops on hook

    Surface sc = surface single crochet

    • holding working yarn behind piece, hook in front of piece, insert hook through piece, yo, pull yarn through piece, proceed to sc

    Festive Mystery CAL Part 8

    Right Front Leg

    Start right front leg with brown yarn.

    Round 1: Insert hook into stitch closest to the white part of belly. Surface sc10 over posterior outer part of leg in clockwise (3 on inner side in chain, 7 on outer sides in original st) (all brown) – 10st

    Round 2: Sc2, 2sc1, sc4, 2sc1, sc2 (all brown) - 12st

    Round 3: Sc12 (brown) - 12st

    Stuff the leg.

    Round 4: Sc1, sc3tog1, sc3, 2sc2, sc3 (all brown) - 12st

    Round 5: Sc12 (brown) - 12st

    Round 6: Sc1, sc3tog1, sc4, 3sc2, sc2 (all white) - 14st 

    Stuff the leg. Cut off brown yarn. 

    Round 7: Sc3tog1, sc11 (all white) - 12st 

    Add stuffing again.

    Round 8: Sc3tog1, sc9 (all dark brown) - 10st 

    Add stuffing again.

    Round 9: Sc2tog1, dc6tog1, sc2tog1 (all dark brown) - 3st

    Close up in FLO and end off.

    Remember to sew up any empty holes.
