    Part 2 – Building on the Mystery

    Last time, we kicked off the Festive Mystery CAL by starting the very first piece of our secret Christmas character. 🎄 Nibbles is still on the hunt for his missing snacks, while Tinsel continues to stir up a little mischief along the way.

    This week, we’re adding the next piece to our character. With each stitch, the shape is becoming clearer — but the full reveal is still a surprise! ✨

    By the end of this part, you’ll have made solid progress and your project will start to take on more personality.

    Materials You’ll Need

    The materials needed are listed below or if you wish to see what I start off most of my projects with, then check out this post on “My Crochet Tools and Accessories that are Super Simple to Start With”. This time I will be working with chunky weight yarn.

    Yarn

    Himalayan Dolphin or Dolce Yarnart or any equivalent chunky weight yarn for main piece

    • Brown (100g)

    • Dark brown (100g)

    • White (100g)

    Scheepjes Catona or any equivalent fingering or sport weight yarn for accessories

    • Black (25g)

    • White (25g)

    Crochet Hooks

    4.5mm Etimo Tulip crochet hook

    3.0mm Clover Soft Touch crochet hook

    Rest of Supplies

    Darning needle

    Stitch markers

    Filling – use leftover yarn or polyester fiberfill

    1. Chunky weight yarn - Himalayan Dolphin or Dolce Yarnart or any equivalent for main piece

    White x 1 (100g)

    Light brown x 1 (100g)

    Dark brown x 1 (100g)

    2. Fingering weight yarn - Scheepjes Catona for accessories

    White x 1 (25g)

    Black x 1 (25g)

    Crochet Hooks

     

    Larger

    4.5mm Etimo Tulip

     

    Smaller

    3.0mm Clover  

     

    Rest of Supplies

    Darning Needles

    Stuffing

    Use leftover yarn or polyester fibrefill

    Stitch Markers

    Plastic stitch markers or metal stitch markers

    Terminology You’ll Need

    Here I have listed the techniques needed to crochet just this first part . Each one is individually linked if you need to learn more about how to master each technique, or you could check out this post on “How to Learn Basic Crochet Stitches step by step for Absolute Beginners - 6 Easy Steps!”.

    Basic Crochet Stitches

    Ch = chain

    Sc = single crochet

    Hdc = half double crochet

    Dc = double crochet

    Tr = treble crochet

    Sl st = slip stitch 

    St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)

    2sc1 = single crochet increase (meaning 2 single crochet in same stitch) 

    Sc2tog1 = single crochet decrease (referring to invisible decrease) 

    FLO = front loop only

    BLO = back loop only

    Special Crochet Stitches

    6sc1 = 6 single crochet in same stitch

    3dc2 = 2 half double crochet in next 2 stitches

    Dc4tog1 = double crochet 4 together

    • = yo, insert hook in indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2, [yo, insert hook in next, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2] 3 times, (5 loops on hook), yo, pull through all loops on hook

    Dc6tog1 = double crochet 6 together

    • = yo, insert hook in indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2, [yo, insert hook in next, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2] 5 times, (7 loops on hook), yo, pull through all loops on hook

    Continue with brown and white yarn. Cut off dark brown yarn.

    • Round 10: Sc8 (brown), 2sc2 (brown), sc11 (brown), sc8 (white), dc4tog1 (white), sc8 (white), sc2 (brown) - 42st

    • Round 11: Sc9 (brown), 2sc2 (brown), sc12 (brown), sc6 (white), dc6tog1 (white), sc6 (white), sc1 (brown) - 39st

    • Round 12: Sc10 (brown), 2sc2 (brown), sc13 (brown), sc2 (white), sc2tog2 (white), 6sc1 (white), sc2tog2 (white), sc2 (white), sc1 (brown) - 42st

    • Round 13: Sc10 (brown), hdc1 (brown), 3dc2 (brown), hdc1 (brown), sc13 (brown), sc2tog2 (white), dc6tog1 (white), sc2tog2 (white), sc1 (brown) - 37st
