Welcome to the Festive Mystery CAL
Welcome to the Festive Mystery Crochet Along (CAL)! This free crochet project is released in parts, so you can follow along week by week and build a surprise Christmas character.
In each installment, you’ll get step-by-step instructions, photos, video tutorial and a fun holiday story to go with your crochet.

Part 1 – Let’s Get Started!
Something strange has been happening this Christmas… Nibbles’ favorite snacks have gone missing, and his mischievous friend Tinsel might have something to do with it.
In this CAL, we’ll be building a secret festive character together, piece by piece. Each week you’ll uncover more of the mystery until the full story (and the full toy!) comes together at the end.
Today, we’re starting with the very first piece of our secret character. By the end of this part, you’ll have the foundation ready for what’s to come.

Materials You’ll Need
The materials needed are listed below or if you wish to see what I start off most of my projects with, then check out this post on “My Crochet Tools and Accessories that are Super Simple to Start With”. This time I will be working with chunky weight yarn.
Yarn
Himalayan Dolphin or Dolce Yarnart or any equivalent chunky weight yarn for main piece
Brown (100g)
Dark brown (100g)
White (100g)
Scheepjes Catona or any equivalent fingering or sport weight yarn for accessories
Black (25g)
White (25g)
Crochet Hooks
4.5mm Etimo Tulip crochet hook
3.0mm Clover Soft Touch crochet hook
Rest of Supplies
Darning needle
Filling – use leftover yarn or polyester fiberfill

Terminology You’ll Need
Here I have listed the techniques needed to crochet just this first part . Each one is individually linked if you need to learn more about how to master each technique, or you could check out this post on “How to Learn Basic Crochet Stitches step by step for Absolute Beginners - 6 Easy Steps!”.
Basic Crochet Stitches
Ch = chain
St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)
2sc1 = single crochet increase (meaning 2 single crochet in same stitch)
Sc2tog1 = single crochet decrease (referring to invisible decrease)
Special Crochet Stitches
3sc1 = 3 single crochet in same stitch
5hdc1 = 5 half double crochet in same stitch
4dc bob = 4 double crochet bobble stitch
= yo, insert hook in indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops, [yo, insert hook in same, yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times, yo, pull through 5 loops on hook

Festive Mystery CAL Part 1
Start off using brown yarn.
Round 1: Ch4, work into 2nd ch from hook, sc2, 3sc1, go around and work into the other side of foundation chain, sc1, 2sc1 (all brown) – 8st
Round 2: Sc3, 2sc1, sc3, 2sc1 (all brown) - 10st
Round 3: 2sc4, [sc1, ch2, work into 2nd ch from hook, (sc1, dc1, ch1 and sl st 1 down, tr1, dc1, sc1), sc1 in same main st], 2sc4, [sc1, ch2, work into 2nd ch from hook, (sc1, dc1, tr1, ch1 and sl st 1 down, dc1, sc1), sc1 in main st] (all brown) - 20st
Round 4: Sc8, sc1 before ear, sc1 after ear, sc8, sc1 before ear, sc1 after ear (all brown) - 20st
Get ready white yarn.
Round 5: Sc3 (brown), 2sc2 (brown), sc7 (brown), sc2 (white), 3sc1 (brown), sc2 (white), sc3 (brown) - 24st
Round 6: Sc4 (brown), 2sc2 (brown), sc7 (brown), sc4 (white), 5hdc1 (brown), sc4 (white), sc2 (brown) - 30st
Round 7: Sc5 (brown), 2sc2 (brown), sc8 (brown), sc6 (white), 5hdc1 (brown), sc6 (white), sc2 (brown) - 36st
Round 8: Sc6 (brown), 2sc2 (brown), sc10 (brown), sc5 (white), sc2 (brown), 4sc1 (brown), sc2 (brown), sc5 (white), sc3 (brown) - 41st
Round 9: Sc7 (brown), 2sc2 (brown), sc10 (brown), sc10 (white), 4dc bob (dark brown), sc9 (white), sc2 (brown) - 43st
