Questions to ask before gifting a crocheter

    1. Who are you gifting to?

First and foremost, make sure the person you are gifting to is a crocheter and not a knitter. Many crocheters and knitters get super frustrated when they get mistaken for the other! The tools for each craft can be similar but also different in many ways!

    2. What is their skill level?

This is an important point to find out because what items beginners need is different from intermediate or advanced crocheters. Presumably if they are seasoned crocheters already, they would have the basic crochet tools and accessories [link to blog article], so you should consider more unconventional presents.

    3. Do you know what they like to make?

There are many different types of things that crocheters make - it could range from hats and scarfs, to garments or blankets or like me, specifically amigurumi. These are useful to find out because only certain accessories are used by certain crochet projects like safety eyes for amigurumi!

    4. What do they already have?

Sometimes this is difficult to determine but suffice to say, assume they have all the basic crochet tools and accessories [link to blog article] already. So whatever you can get for them makes crocheting in general easier for them.

    5. What have they said they always wanted to try but have not done so?

Crocheters tend to be creatures of habit, meaning they generally like to stick to the same yarn weights, same yarn brands and same crochet hook sizes. Changing up some yarn materials and crochet hook sizes might make them more adventurous!

    6. Have they tried amigurumi?

Encourage them too! Of course I would say that since it has brought me so much joy! Gifting them amigurumi accessories sometimes helps encourages them to try out other forms of crocheting.

    7. What is on their wishlist?

Perhaps they have mentioned to you once or twice that nice beautiful yarn they were eyeing or maybe complaining that their wrist is painful but the ergonomic hooks they were looking at were slightly out of budget. Think back about anything in particular they mentioned which will help with finding gifts.

    8. What is your budget?

Another important consideration, this amount might be different for different folks you are gifting to. All of these ideas below costs less than $50, with some even less than $20 so there is something to consider for different budget ranges. After all, it’s the thought that counts right?

    Gift guide for crocheters

Here I divided the ideas into essential tools, accessory tools, items that make crocheting easier, storage ideas, help to make the yarn stash tidier, education resources and kits, and a little on apparel.

For most of them apart from the essential tools, for the basic crocheter, they might not have these items. As for the essential tools, I picked some ideas that they might not have as they are less conventional. I hope these help with ideas!

    Essential tools

The tools every crocheter needs like yarn, crochet hook, stitch markers and scissors.

    1. Yarn packs

Every crocheter’s weak spot! If you are not sure what yarn colours they have already, why not just get a yarn pack with a selection of colours to choose from?

    2. Ombré or variegated yarn

Along the same lines, try gifting a special type of yarn that no crocheter can say no to - a pretty colourful one! Even better if it is a mixture of they favourite colours in one ball.

    3. Chunky yarn

Apart from picking a different yarn colour from what they would usually use, how about a different yarn weight or material? For amigurumi crocheters who usually use DK or fingering yarn, maybe get a ball of chenille chunky yarn for them to experiment with! Remember to get an accompanying crochet hook with right size if they do not have it.

    4. Ergonomic crochet hooks

Consider luxury ergonomic crochet hooks like maybe furls - they have odyssey range and wood range. Other ideas would be clover soft touch and also maybe etimo tulip crochet hooks as well!

    5. Stitch markers

One of my favourite ways to accessorize my crochet projects, especially the metal types that can come with all kinds of pin designs. Here is an example of what I mean but there are even more selections on Etsy done by small crafting businesses.

    6. Embroidery scissors and sheath

Thought to include this as well because it is so pretty! Crocheters definitely scissors in their arsenal so this might come as a interesting gift. It comes with a pretty sheath too!

    Accessory tools

These are tools that most crocheters might not think to get because they are not super essential. But as a gift, they could be awesome to help out with their crochet projects.

    7. Wraps per inch tool

Consider this nifty tool for crocheters who sometimes lose their yarn label, have no idea what yarn weight is their yarn and the right corresponding crochet hook to use. It fits nicely into a wallet too!

    8. Gauge ruler

Crochet gauge or tension is pretty important in many types of crochet projects, sometimes less so for amigurumi. But it still affects its size. Reading a crochet gauge, matching it and then changing it up can be a useful skill.

    9. Eye stickers for dolls

This is a great gift for amigurumi crocheters, especially for dolls but they can be used for animals too! An additional idea on top of using the usual safety eyes that most crocheters use. There are even more options on Etsy!

    10. Wool brush

Brush up acrylic or wool pieces to create a fluffy appearance. I did that before for mini winter coats that I made just to give a fuzzy look. Crocheters technically don’t need any super special craft brush, something like this could do fine too.

    Makes crocheting easier

Here are more ideas that go beyond the basic tools and some of them I have myself and are super useful!

    11. Neck light

Great for when the spouse of crocheters have gone to sleep and they still want to continue crocheting. Simply place around their neck and aim it at the project they are working on and voila, they can see the stitches in the dark.

    12. Mini vacuum

Another great tool for cleaning up stray and stash yarn, or even the shedding parts of chenille yarn. Small enough for a crocheter’s work table but definitely enough room for the yarn lying around!

    13. Wrist guard or comfort gloves

This helps crocheters who generally crochet for long periods of time and are experiencing wrist pain. I won’t go into the causes of that because there are so many possibilities but suffice to say this helped me with my carpal tunnel syndrome after I delivered my baby.

    14. Light up crochet hooks

Great for crocheters who love to use dark yarn especially black yarn. It can be difficult to see individual stitches in black yarn so these type of crochet hooks that can light up make it easier to crochet.

    15. Yarn ring

Something I’ve always wanted to try, probably some day! It is to keep yarn in place as crocheting is done. It is meant to be placed on the middle finger of the non dominant hand and the yarn threaded through the loop on it.

    16. Yarn bowl

Yarn bowls holds the yarn ball and also helps prevent entanglement of yarn as crocheting is done. It can be decorative or really helpful with keeping crochet projects neat. But it is not particularly portable and won’t work if the project involves multiple colours.

    Storage

    17. Crochet hook case

This helps not only with organization but storage of crochet hooks. If you are crafty enough, you could crochet one or sew one as a gift! Or just buy one for your fellow crocheter that you want to gift to.

    18. Couch arm caddy

If you are gifting a Netflix crocheter, then this couch arm caddy might come in really useful. Crocheters could use the pouch dangling from the side of the sofa to hold their crochet hooks, or yarn or WIPs.

    19. Yarn organizer

Yarn hoarding in a common crocheter past time so organizing them is pretty essential. This is collapsible for when it is not needed and it hangs up easily in a cupboard to store yarn. Something I’m considering getting soon to sort out my yarn!

    20. Project storage

Super practical gift for the super practical crocheter. Preferably a transparent one so you can see what is stored inside. This is specifically for home storage, the next point is for portable storage.

    21. Make-up bag

This is actually one of my essential crochet tools, my other ones are included in ‘My Crochet Tools and Accessories’ blog post here.  Finding a good portable bag to hold a few yarn balls, plus crochet hooks and other tools is pretty hand, so gifting this might prove to be super useful!

    Tidy yarn

    22. Yarn sleeves

Another name for yarn sleeves is thread nets. Consider this another idea to keep yarn balls neatly together, especially when there are multiple stray yarn ends. Another practical gift!

    23. Wooden yarn colour chart

Another item that you can consider DIY-ing before gifting, or you could just get this wooden card for the crocheter in your life. Simply write in the colours and attach the corresponding yarn just beside it so the crocheter will know what colours she has in her stash.

    24. Yarn winder

This is a gift that would save crocheters so much time! Crocheters struggle with tangled yarn all the time and a winder would help so much with saving time winding up yarn. A few more hours to crochet instead of untangle - they will appreciate it for sure!

    25. Yarn swift

Having a yarn swift is different from a yarn winder. For crocheters who love to buy luxurious yarns or even hand dyed yarns, they often come in hanks rather than skeins. Placing the hank around the swift and letting it do its work will transform it into skein! From a crocheter who has struggled with untangling hanks before, this can be really useful!

    Crocheting apparel

Apparel is something that I generally would not get as a crocheter but it is one of the safest options for a non crocheter to gift a crocheter. Think t-shirts, bags, crochet-themed clothes or apparel. Here I have only included one suggestion because it’s too cute not to include.

    26. Yarn earrings

If you are gifting to a crocheter who loves earrings, then consider this cute pair. There are even cuter ones in Etsy because they are hand-made. Or maybe consider making a pair yourself by making a miniature hank of yarn!

    Education and kits

    27. Crochet books

This is a type of gift you can give even for beginners, intermediate or advanced crocheter. Of course like I mentioned above, you need to know the skill level of the crocheter you are gifting to. For a newbie maybe a beginner’s guide, for intermediate or advanced crocheter, probably a pattern book or the next idea.

    28. Amigurumi kits

For amigurumi lovers, this is too awesome to pass up on giving, especially if the crocheter you are gifting to has a special character they love! There is something for everyone - Snoopy, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Disney princesses, even Hello Kitty.

    29. Crochet society box

Think subscription box but for crochet lovers! Of course it’s a recurring cost so maybe you buy the first 2 months and then hand it over? Haha I know not the best idea but imagine the look on their face when they receive it - priceless, which is what you want when you gift others right? Or you could just gift one of the boxes with the pretty yarn and crochet equipment too!

    30. Amigurumi foundation course

How could I resist the chance to include one of my offers? This is a great idea for crocheters who have done many other projects maybe blankets, garments or hats and they want to try out amigurumi! It has all the basics of crocheting plus more on amigurumi techniques and troubleshooting common amigurumi problems.

    Conclusion

I hope this list of 30 ideas to buy gift for the crocheter in your life is useful or perhaps you want some of these as well if you are a crocheter. Think essential or accessory tools, things that make crocheting easier, yarn storage or organization ideas or even education!
