How to do Double Crochet
This is the sixth tutorial in my ‘Back to Basics’ series.
As stated in previous posts, I had gone through how to do a single crochet and then subsequently how to do a half double crochet. This time we are trying to do a double crochet.
A double crochet is 2 times the height of a single crochet and also higher than a half double crochet. It is also a great stitch to use for bobble stitches. How to make a bobble stitch is more extensively covered in my free 30-page ebook (check below).
Similar to starting a hdc, yarn over first before inserting the hook, so you should have 2 loops on hook even before the insertion.
Insert, yarn over and pull through desired stitch.
The above steps are similar to the first few steps of making a hdc. This is where it starts to differ in step 6.
Pull yarn only through 2 of 3 loops on hook. (In making a hdc, you would have pulled the yarn through all 3 loops on the hook and would have ended up with a hdc).
In making a dc, there is an additional step. After pulling through 2 of the 3 loops, you have to yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops.
There you have it, the final double crochet! As you can see, the height is taller than that of a sc or even a hdc. Sometimes, I add a chain 2 before starting the dc, so that the edges are not sloping like in step 8.
Of course there are taller stitches like making a treble crochet and then there’s double treble crochet. I’ve gone even taller than that to make interesting patterns but that’s for another time perhaps.
