See the shapes.
Shape the possibilities.

Go beyond following amigurumi patterns—and begin understanding how they’re designed.

Begin understanding how amigurumi are designed

You have ideas for amigurumi you would love to create.

But how do you turn the character in your head into actual stitches?

Learn how basic shapes, increases, decreases, bends, colour changes and attachment decisions work together—so you have a clearer starting point for modifying patterns and bringing more of your own amigurumi ideas to life.

Build your skills—one shape, technique and design decision at a time.

You can follow a pattern—but creating without one feels completely different

When every round has already been written, you can comfortably work through the project. When you try to create or modify something yourself, questions appear everywhere.

❓Where should the increases go?

❓How many stitches should you add?

❓When should you begin decreasing?

❓How do you turn a sphere into an animal head?

❓How do you curve a limb or tail?

❓Which shape should you begin with?

The problem usually isn’t that you need another pattern

Patterns are wonderful for showing you how to recreate one particular project. But they don’t always explain why the designer chose those shapes, placed the shaping there or chose one construction method over another.

“You have the idea. You know how to crochet. What’s missing is a clearer view of the decisions between the idea and the finished amigurumi.”

What if you could start seeing the building blocks instead?

When most people look at a crocheted mushroom, they see a mushroom. When I’m designing one, I see a hemisphere for the cap and a cylinder—or perhaps a slightly pear-shaped cylinder—for the stem.

The mushroom is no longer one complicated object. It becomes a combination of familiar shapes.

“I love the 3D shapes you are showing how to do, I probably would not even have though of them. Brilliant .“

Hi I’m Huipei!

I’m the crochet designer behind Pocket Yarnlings—and also a family physician and mum of two.

I learned to crochet in 2015 while working as a junior doctor in a paediatric emergency department. As I began designing, I became fascinated by the construction underneath every character.

That curiosity became the tutorials, patterns, courses and workshops inside this pathway—now used by more than 2,000 course customers and around 8,000 pattern users. My work has also appeared in Crochet Now and Happily Hooked.

No rushing required

Learn at your own pace.
Return whenever you need it.
