Small enough to finish
A festive project that won’t languish in your WIP bin
I love the idea of a handmade Advent calendar—but making 24 individual compartments can quickly become a much larger project than expected.
And I know what happens when a project drags on for too long. At least for me, that’s when it risks disappearing into the WIP bin!
That’s why I kept this version intentionally small. The Mini Modular Advent Box uses a manageable 3 × 3 arrangement, giving you nine little compartments without asking you to complete a Christmas marathon.

Four short lessons
From one soft little box to a complete modular structure
Begin with a simple 9 × 9-stitch square, then watch the separate pieces become one structured box.
Crochet the individual boxes
Start with a flat square base before transitioning into rounds to create the open sides of each compartment.
Join the boxes together
Use whip stitch to connect the individual boxes into rows and build the complete 3 × 3 grid.
Make the larger outer base
Use a little simple crochet maths to make the larger structure that will house all nine boxes.
Bring everything together
Attach the grid to the outer base with mattress stitch, then add the final blocking and finishing touches.
One structure, many possibilities
Originally spring. Reimagined for Christmas.
The original Modular Box first appeared inside my Meadow Mystery CAL as a green-and-white planter box, with a rabbit and Easter eggs hiding among the “grass.”
But while I was designing it, I had already wondered whether the same structure could eventually become an Advent Box.
Simply changing the colours and what you place inside can give it a completely different purpose.
The rabbit and Easter egg patterns are shown as an example only and are not included in the Mini Modular Advent Box Challenge.

Can I customise the number or size of the compartments?
